Uganda Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking Operational Updates 2024

Uganda Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking Operational Updates 2024

Uganda, famously known as the "Pearl of Africa," boasts a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including the majestic mountain gorillas and the playful chimpanzees. Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking have become iconic experiences for travelers seeking encounters with these fascinating primates in their natural habitats. However, to ensure a seamless and enriching experience, it's crucial to stay informed about the latest operational updates for 2024 made by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Background

Gorilla and chimpanzee conservation efforts in Uganda have a rich history, marked by dedicated initiatives aimed at protecting these endangered species. Over the years, gorilla and chimpanzee trekking have evolved from mere tourist activities to vital components of sustainable wildlife tourism. Through regulated tourism, revenue generated from permits directly supports conservation efforts and local communities.

Operational Updates 2024

In 2024, several operational updates have been implemented to enhance the gorilla and chimpanzee trekking experience. Permit availability and pricing have been adjusted to manage visitor numbers effectively while ensuring the sustainability of wildlife tourism.

Permits for Foreign Non Residents

To go gorilla trekking in Uganda, one need a gorilla trekking permit which is issued by only and only the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

What is a Gorilla Trekking Permit

A Gorilla Permit is a legal document issued by the Uganda Wildlife, allowing you to be with a Gorilla Family. Uganda Wildlife Authority issues the Permits.

There are presently 152 Permits available each day. The minimum age of a participant is 15. The Permit is issued not for a particular Gorilla Group, but a Bwindi Impenetrable Forest sector such as Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. The Nyakagezi Group in Mgahinga Gorilla Park is different since it is the only group there. Permits are issued for a fixed date. That date is hard to change, and it needs approval.

Permit Costs for Foreign Non Residents

From the 1st of July, 2024, to 30th June 2026 the cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda for the Foreign Non Residents is increased from $700 to $800. To allow for Advanced Booking, this tariff will be from 1st April, 2024. Take note the the Gorilla Trekking permits are only sold to tour operators licensed by Uganda Tourism Board.

On site Payments

The Uganda Wildife Authority informs you and us that no payments should be made on ground at the national parks for the gorilla and chimpanzee tracking. Any individual, whether they are tour operators or Uganda Wildlife Authority Staff that claims to offer gorilla or chimpanzee trekking permits on behalf of the Uganda Wildife Authority does this illegaly and should be reported promptly.

Extra Permits

The Uganda Wildlife Authority is no longer accepting or approving requests for extra permits. This policy is strictly enforced and all partners are reminded to choose dates and sectors so that they can get the total number of permits they require.

Making Reservations

Making reservations for gorilla trekking permits is different from inquiring about it. Therefore one must not think that inquiring directly means that one has reserved the gorilla trekking permit.

A reservation is only confirmed upon insurance of the proforma invoice and a ticket number, which remains within our system for 7 days pending payment. After this period, all unpaid reservations will be made available for sale to other interested parties.

Conclusion

These updates 2024 will help you make an informed decision while planning your gorilla trekking safari in Uganda
